Meet the Wiseguys!

This children's adventure combines an underlying environmental and science theme with rough, tough characters that battle to victory through teamwork, newly found friendship, and loyalty.

Summer at Seaside Heights New Jersey sizzles with the heat of war between two Seagull gangs -- the Brooklyn New York Bennies and the New Jersey Tommies! The Bennies decide they want to get control of the Tommies' beach, boardwalk, and food, and they leave Brooklyn for the Jersey Shore. Hurricane, the Boss of the Tommies, soon understands the Bennies flew in for more than a vacation as they begin the attack against his crew. Hurricane comes face to face against the threat of Bruno Da Boss, the head of the Bennies Family. He realizes he has to prove himself the stronger leader and protect his territory, as the two seagull gangs prepare for final combat.

Unexpectedly, nature brings its own ferocious life and death struggle to Seaside Heights, as the ocean environment becomes the seagulls' harshest enemy! Hurricane and Bruno are forced to join together with strange allies -- a boy named Jimmy and his Dad -- proving that personal character is what counts in the fight for survival.

Teacher Review!

My students enjoyed Joisey Boyds as a read aloud when we were working on character study in language arts! We had insightful discussions about gangs and bullying, including ways the birds joined forces to solve a shared problem. In science we used seagulls as a springboard for further research on this type of bird and its ecosystem. We also used sections of the story to lead into a study about the affects of pollution in the food chain for birds and other animals, which is part of our science standards.
